Beirut city center will have two marinas, to the west and east of its waterfront. At the heart of the city, within short walking distance of the Beirut souks, hotel district, and historic core, the (western) Beirut Marina is becoming a major attraction. During the 2004 summer season, the marina has welcomed close to 130 boats. Once fully developed, its capacity will attain 300 boats, ranging in size from 5 to 50 meters. Solidere is developing and operating Beirut Marina as part of its 50-year agreement with the State which also includes the planned underground Corniche car park. Real estate development around Beirut Marina is undertaken by Beirut Waterfront Development s.a.l., with 50% Solidere and 50% Stow Waterfront shareholding. The facilities, designed by Steven Holl Architects (US), include a town quay of waterside restaurants, hotel / apartments, leisure and shopping facilities, yacht club, harbor master, customs and immigration buildings. A belvedere overlooking Beirut Marina from the Corniche, as well as a footbridge, underpasses, stairs and ramps providing pedestrian links, are part of the overall plan that will connect the marina to the surrounding area and provide public access to the town quay. The first Beirut International Jazz Festival took place in Beirut Marina in the summer of 2004. Sea-related events included Mediterranean theme regattas, artistic performances, fireworks and laser shows aboard ships."
